EQL 21 is coming

EQL 20 is more or less over and we can look back on a very active season even though we had a small number of clans compared to the hay days of QW.

Given the success of EQL 20 I am more than willing to run another season during the spring of 2016. I think the current concept is good but I will consider splitting the scene in 2 or more divisions if the number of clans is big enough.

Other than that I am thinking about adding 2-3 maps next season since 61% thought that the map pool should be larger in a recent poll. 15% of respondants also said that one of the CMT maps is their most favored map. I am mainly thinking about adding 2 or 3 of the following maps: CMT1B, CMT3 and CMT4.

The format with A, B and C playoffs will be kept intact in one way or another depending on what the divisions will look like.

Your thoughts on the matter?

Would be nice with some other map(s) besides cmt as i think they are way too oversized (corridors and open rooms) for qw and 4on4 in general. As all the cmt maps seems to be made with ffa in mind.

Even so, it will be nice with some new maps.

Cmt maps work just fine in 4on4. Out of those three I think cmt3 is the worst because of only one RL and no possibility to discharge. It's too easy to fly through the map with quad lg after gaining control. Cmt1b and cmt4 have always worked very well and I don't see them being too big. The cmt4 we played in the all stars match was one of the best 4on4 rounds I've played in years.

What makes you think that all the cmt maps have been designed with ffa in mind? How much have you played them in 4on4?

In addition bo5 finals in a three-map pool have never made any sense.

Because of the oversized rooms and corridors. It might just be me that are used to the size of the original maps. i have tried em in mixes.

I'd like to see exmx maps included in a 7 map pool.

e1m5, e2m2tdm, e3m3, e3m6/e3m6tdm, e3m7/e3m7tdm, e4m3 - are all OK in my book.
Out of the CMT maps i like CMT1b and CMT2 and CMT3 best.

I don't care to much about what maps we end on - but an increase to five or even seven would be nice.

Regarding structure, I don't have a problem with playing against sd,fom,c88 chosen etc... It's a highlight of the seasons for me at least =)
We stole some quads and a few pentas from them, managed to kill their RL's from time to time. It's pretty good! =)

But it's not how everyone views it.. Not sure what would be the best for everyone - or if everyone that wants smaller divisions knows what that would be like. It might be six matches per season, and the better teams will still own the weaker teams.
I would vote for keeping one division as it gives us more time to play, and that's why we are here.

Probably good to just keep it open though, like you did last season, and evaluate how the teams are looking at the start.

Perhaps an idea would be to have bo5 series in all the league play matches ? Then possibly clans could split up a bit when they complete a series?

Muff1n, oversized compared to what? Dm3 pent? Dm3 center? Dm3 bridge area? E1M2 mega room?

Ocoini, go read my post about exmy maps @ quakeworld.nu, but in short: exmy maps are mediocre at best for 4on4, even the tdm versions. Why not use custom maps which actually were designed with deathmatch rather than single player in mind?

would be nice to include some other game's maps for a change. just choose a couple that would work for 4on4 in qw. I believe that this would bring more teams like "Wrong game" this seaso (players from other games) and would be an extra motivation for them to play.

I am primarily concerned about keeping the players we have. Lets face it, we have always lost more players than we have gained each year. Im not sure new maps would mean a huge influx of new players.

I am suggesting to add a few maps, because it might make it more fun to play for us that are left, since it looked like alot of fun in the allstar game that was played recently.

I never player quakelive, but if i had a team in qw, i would probably join a quakelive tourney if it features qw maps.

Not sure if I would still play a qw tourney featuring qlive maps only :D

CMT maps were made for 4on4, that was the whole idea behind the project!

Even CMT4 which was just a modification of an old map (androm9) I suggested to Link who ran the project was designed with teamplay in mind (hence the pent location).

Doesn't necessarily mean they are great 4on4 maps of course, but the focus certainly wasn't to build FFA maps.

Possibly they feel oversized compared to older maps because movement possibilities in QW (bunnyhops and RJ) were better understood so they are a bit more expansive in that regard. Although in some cases that leads to trick jumps being implemented for the sake of it!

yeah ok that explains why they are designed the way they are hangtime.

the problem i have encountered while playing say cmt3 is that gl,sng,sg,ssg is of no value because of the massive size of rooms and corridors, i understand the bunny hopping aspect but it makes the maps flawed imo. maps need both, narrow and big rooms(dm3 is a prime example). but just add the maps and we will see how it works out.

Another problem is also that cmt3 looks the same all over, the same textures is used everywhere. So new players will feel lost, confused etc. it becomes a maze of tunnels and rooms and its hard to get a sense of where u are and where to go.

also look at dm3, every room is very different from each other with different textures to give u some kind of indication of where the hell u are =)

Not sure why some ppl here - after 19 years of quake - try to argue with certain issues on maps when you got dm2, dm3 and episode 1 map 2 as TB3. Give me a f***ing break lol.

The reason for TB3 is not because the maps are especially good for 4v4. They were crafted as TB3 because of lack of other things.

Every argument here is biased on personal taste. I understand the fun with 4v4 on dm2, its f***ing carnage and that is fun. Hence the opposite boomstick map e1m2 where other things matter.

Its just taste ppl.

The CMT project did not work for the reasons above, if the CMT project had been launched 1998 we would never had the TB3 we have now.

In my humble (and biased) opinion, if you want some new maps and some new freshness into this game then play something else. From a dude that was open to any maps and spent hours and hours with mappers and (elite) players to find out what was good and bad about a map with hours and hours of game testing, then i can say this:

Schloss Adler is a 2 RL carnage map that brings something else than dm2. Cmt5b is a hard to learn but when you learn it the map is incredible and you can move fast to any area. Cmt2 is the most balanced one with small rooms and hallways also (like some ppl need).

Those are my 3 fav maps if you talk about customs. Why? We tested everything on all maps. For me, these 3 maps played out the best. Cmt2 was always good when 2 even teams played, loved it. SR played sometimes and made some demos on schlos, it was a feast. Cmt5b never got played enough because ppl wouldnt learn it, but the few good games we had on it i saw the huge potenial.

Cmt4, as Milton says, always rocked because it was easy to learn. Cmt1b also easy to learn and SR and CMF had a lot of good games on it (or was it TVS). Cmt3 was also great.

We even had our own tournament with the CMT maps: NQR-CMT, we did 2 seasons.

So what?

You all went back to TB3.

So why are you STILL talking about new maps for 4v4?

If i couldnt do it no one thats still left in the scene cant do it either.

Oh and I watched the allstar games on youtube. Cmt3 and 4 looked pretty cool to me. What would happen on these maps with 1000 games played? Nobody knows.

Thing is that good maps get played. Age old discussion but since cmt maps looked like some fun in the allstar game I thought I would throw out a thought about it and see what the players think.

Imo it is useless to talk about why we dont play more than 3 maps, if players quit because of maps, if players would start because of maps etc etc etc untill the cows come home.

I just wanted to know if players would like to play some more maps this season, all the rest of this bullshit about what could have been or who was doing what in 2003 I dont care about. And spare me shit like kloze is posting. It is not useful to keep nagging about what could have been.

Im just trying to run a fun 4on4 tournament.

I distinctly remember playing 4on4 on e4m3 it, AND ffa's, and yea, it was damn fun at the time! But of course it could be relative to who you played with etc.. ;)

Actually i think it would be better with a good old ladder league like nqr2/admort, or maybe just a 1 map tournament thunderdome/duelmania style. At least with double elimination u get a couple of games and maybe some pracs. Then you reset the tournament with a new map. Would be a cool thing if some teams wanted this. Could do any map really. In the old days dm6 dmm3 was a 4v4 map lol :)

How about some ideas in regards of allowing "multi-claning" or allowing draft picks for one or two games per season for a player from another team?
I think there are players who are more active and would enjoy playing more often - and clans who would benefit from this support.

Also, clans don't really hate each other anymore, so I don't know if the concept of the singularity of "belonging into one clan only" still serves its original purpose.
