just checking, in the semis the teams are still seeded from
the season results right? so lets say team 1-4 all win their
quarters.. then it is 1vs4 and 2vs3..

better example would have been something like teams 1,3,5,7
win the first round game, then it would be 1 vs 7 and 3 vs 5
(instead of 1 vs 5 and 3 vs 7 what usually happens because
people like to make brackets) :D

Razor that should come as a natural result of it yes.
Marklar, yeah well what happens if team 2 wins team 7 and
team 4 wins team 5 instead. Then it should have been: 1 vs
2, and 3 vs 4 in semis which is unnacceptable. So yeah
razor, you are right.

[(1 vs 8) vs (4 vs 5)] vs [(2 vs 7) vs (3 vs 6)] - this is
best possible static single elimination bracket.

ehm fog, you might wanna read again...
to simplify it further: the highest seeded team always plays
against the lowest seeded team (by regular season
standards)
you know, if team 2 wins in my example, then the teams that
are in semis are 1,2,3,5 and it would be 1 vs 5 and 2 vs
3...
not that hard!:D

Allright, I get your point fifi, but if team 7 manages to
win vs team 2, I think they deserve to play against team 3
or 6, and not face #1 in semis.
Since if team #7 would win #2, they probably should end up
in final with #1, which is impossible if they play #1 in
semis. :)

Yeah.. I like the static-bracket approach as well. Just
brought it up since there's been talk about regular season
games not being that important, and this would be a little
push (very small) towards it while maintaining bigger
divisions and 8-team playoffs.
p.s. while not so relevant in qw, most sport leagues seed
the teams in every playoff round according to the regular
season rankings :)

The way to go is obviously to have the best seed play the
worst in every playoff round.
It makes the long regular season more important and that's
the way it's done in every major sports leagues.
"Permanent brackets" are only used in quick competitions
where no regular season is played. Like tennis tournaments.

Hey, I write schedules for big sports competitions and can
confirm, the playoffs are always 1v8, 2v7, 3v6, 4v5, leading
to 1v4, 2v3 semis - if any games go against seed, then the
teams simply switch seed - the matches on the schedule
remain the same.
If a division is split into two next season and seeding is
done based on this season's results, it'd make sense to have
1,3,5,7 and 2,4,6,8 (etc) as the groups, to avoid group
rematches in the quarter finals.
Also possible to have a crossover before the QFs if feasible
- 5v12, 6v11, 7v10, 8v9.
As there is always talk about teams not belonging in certain
divisions, it could be good to see a change to the format,
so that a team isn't stuck in a division for a whole season,
and a certain amount of movement is possible. Depending on
how it's done, this could make the various playoffs more
exciting too. This would obviously have to be implemented
without causing numerous rapes, and prob depends on quite a
bit of activity so might not be feasible.
